Mt. Pleasant, SC -- East Cooper Regional Medical Center plans to construct a 140-bed acute care hospital as a replacement for the current facility. This new, replacement hospital will better serve the needs of the greater East Cooper community. The approximately $160 million facility will be situated on 55 acres adjacent to the current campus and located at the intersection of Mathis Ferry Road and Von Kolnitz Road in Mount Pleasant, S.C. The campus will border Interstate 526.
The new facility will provide services including general surgery and medicine, 24-hour emergency care, orthopedics, women's health services, imaging and diagnostic services, neurosurgery and other specialties. Over a year ago, East Cooper Regional Medical Center undertook an extensive review of the existing hospital facility. The results indicated that a replacement facility would best accommodate the growth projected in the Town of Mount Pleasant and the surrounding areas. An application to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control will be submitted within two weeks. Pending Certificate of Need (CON) approval by the state, the new hospital is expected to open in January 2009.
"East Cooper Regional Medical Center is an important resource for our community and provides ready access to health care services. Mount Pleasant and the surrounding areas are growing considerably, and this hospital will grow to accommodate the long-term needs of our area. We are proud to have a tradition of providing quality care in our community and are dedicated to continuing this tradition," said Andrea Wozniak, president and chief executive officer.
Last year, East Cooper Regional Medical Center:
- Gave nearly $11.5 million in free care to low-income patients.
- Paid close to $1.5 million in local taxes and fees.
- Made generous contributions in support of local groups.
- Employed 635 area residents.
- Contributed approximately $26.3 million to the local economy.
