East Cooper Medical Center Receives J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Program
East Cooper Medical Center First S.C. Hospital Recognized for Providing an Outstanding Patient Experience
October 3, 2005 -- East Cooper Medical Center is the first South Carolina hospital to be recognized for service excellence under the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Program. This distinction acknowledges a strong commitment by East Cooper to provide an outstanding patient experience.
East Cooper is a for-profit acute care hospital that has served the Mount Pleasant area since 1986. It is owned by Tenet Healthcare through its subsidiaries.
The service excellence distinction was determined by surveying a random sample of recently discharged patients from East Cooper on their perceptions of their hospital stay and comparing the results to the national benchmark established by the annual J.D. Power and Associates National Hospital Service Performance Study.
The telephone-based research conducted among East Cooper Medical Center patients focuses on the five key drivers of patient satisfaction with their overall hospital experience. The drivers, which were identified in the national study, include: dignity and respect; speed and efficiency; comfort; information and communication; and emotional support.
“Based on the rigorous standards of our national hospital service performance research, only 20 percent of the hospitals in the nation are expected to qualify for this distinction,” said Steven D. Wood, Ph.D., executive director of the healthcare division of J.D. Power and Associates. “East Cooper Medical Center is among an elite class of hospitals.”
“This is a wonderful affirmation of the hard work and dedication of our medical staff and hospital employees,” said Andrea Wozniak, chief executive officer of East Cooper. “The best thing about this prestigious recognition is that it is based on what our patients say about us, and our patients matter the most.”
East Cooper Medical Center exceeded its national benchmark target score for overall patient satisfaction by a significant margin. The hospital performed particularly well compared to the national study in the speed and efficiency with which the staff delivered care to their patients. The hospital received high ratings in this area on the doctor’s coordination of care with nurses, and the availability of the doctor.
East Cooper also performed well relative to the national study in providing emotional support to patients, especially on confidence and trust in the doctor’s skill level, and the hospital personnel’s treatment of family and friends.
Additionally, patients were asked to rate their level of trust and confidence in the hospitals after their most recent stay. Among East Cooper patients, 60 percent indicate they have more or much more trust and confidence in the hospital after their most recent stay.
“East Cooper Medical Center received this distinction by striving to provide patients with a consistent, positive experience,” said Wood. “The caregivers, physicians and administrative staff can be proud of their contribution to the care and health of their community. On a broader note, at a time when consumers are increasingly exerting influence over the delivery of their care and seeking credible resources to make well-informed decisions, being recognized by J.D. Power and Associates as a Distinguished Hospital enables East Cooper and other hospitals to effectively communicate this outstanding accomplishment in the communities they serve.”
Non-government, acute-care hospitals throughout the nation are eligible for the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital recognition. Distinction is valid for one year, after which the hospital may reapply for this recognition.
