Mount Pleasant, S.C. (June 24, 2009) – East Cooper Regional Medical Center’s Disease Specific Care for Advanced Inpatient Diabetes has earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ for health care quality from The Joint Commission. The certification was awarded in addition to the previous certifications received by the hospital for pneumonia, heart failure, advanced stroke, and laminectomy.

To earn this distinction, a disease management program undergoes an extensive, unannounced, on-site evaluation by a team of Joint Commission reviewers every two years. The program is evaluated against Joint Commission standards through an assessment of a program’s processes, the program’s ability to evaluate and improve care within its own organization, and interviews with patients and staff.

“This certification means East Cooper Regional Medical Center does the right things for diabetes inpatients and does them well,” says Jean E.
“East Cooper Regional Medical Center voluntarily pursued this comprehensive, independent evaluation, as well as that for stroke, pneumonia, laminectomy and heart failure, to enhance the safety and quality of care we provide,” says Janie Sinacore-Jaberg, East Cooper Regional Medical Center CEO. “We’re proud to have achieved all of these distinctions.”

The Joint Commission launched its Disease-Specific Care Certification program in 2002.
Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission seeks to continuously improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public through the provision of health care accreditation and related services that support performance improvement in health care organizations. The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits nearly 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States, including more than 8,000 hospitals and home care organizations, and more than 6,800 other health care organizations that provide long term care, assisted living, behavioral health care, laboratory and ambulatory care services.
Mt. Pleasant, SC - Medical professionals are by nature very caring people. So it’s no surprise that that trait would carry over to a concern for the environment. Now a group of East Cooper Regional employees has set out to demonstrate their own commitment to the future of the planet.

The group of employees, which call themselves the Green Team, are led by Delores Minnix, East Cooper Regional’s Payroll Coordinator. After researching the ways in which the hospital’s operations impact the environment, the team developed a plan to help offset those factors.

Naturally, East Cooper Regional established its own environmentally-sensitive policies some time ago. Some of the measures undertaken by the hospital included replacing Styrofoam cups in the cafeteria with eco-friendly paper cups, recycling batteries and light bulbs through the engineering department, and establishing cardboard collection points.

The Green Team decided to augment those efforts with some ideas of their own. They began by inviting Theresa Martin, Specialist for Charleston County Waste and Recycling, to speak on Earth Day at the kickoff of East Cooper Regional’s internal recycling program. Reusable shopping bags were given to employees who attended the event. The Green Team then distributed bins throughout the facility for the collection and disposal of aluminum cans, plastic, glass and paper products, which they now regularly collect for recycling.

Future projects being considered by the team include eliminating the use of bottled water in the hospital and developing transportation alternatives for East Cooper Regional Medical Center employees.

East Cooper Regional Medical Center is a 104-bed acute care hospital located at 1200 Johnnie Dodds Boulevard in Mt.
Mt. Pleasant, SC - Today at 11:00 a.m. the last I-beam will be hoisted into place on the new East Cooper Regional Medical Center, situated adjacent to the current campus and located near the intersection of Mathis Ferry Road and Interstate 526. The Topping Out ceremony signifies the completion of a solid foundation and marks the end of vertical steel construction on the new replacement hospital. The ceremony, hosted by Robins & Morton, Construction Manager, marks a major milestone in construction of the new facility, which is scheduled for completion in early 2010.

Janie Sinacore-Jaberg, FACHE, CEO of East Cooper Regional Medical Center said, “This project is very important to the East Cooper community. This new hospital gives us the capacity we need to take care of our patients now and in the future.” The construction features the newest design elements that are patient-focused and visitor-friendly.

The tradition of commemorating the placing of the final beam at the highest point of building dates back long before steel was used in construction. The origin of the ceremony was to attract good luck to the people who inhabit the building. Over the centuries the tradition has evolved – with each generation adding their unique symbols. The topmost beam is ceremoniously raised into place, carrying with it an American Flag and often an evergreen tree. In East Cooper Regional’s ceremony, however, a native Palmetto tree harvested from the new hospital’s site will be used. This is the ironworkers’ way of signifying completion of their part of the construction and wishing good fortune to those who will use the building.

During the past week, staff and visitors to East Cooper Regional Medical Center had a chance to leave their mark on history by signing the beam that was placed today.

East Cooper Regional Medical Center is a 104-bed acute care hospital located at 1200 Johnnie Dodds Boulevard in Mt.
