East Cooper Medical Center supports Susan G. Komen Lowcountry through Annual Pink in the Rink Event2/6/2014

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – February 6, 2014 – At a press conference Tuesday, the South Carolina Stingrays unveiled their 2014 Pink in the Rink jerseys at East Cooper Medical Center in Mt. Pleasant.

The jerseys will be worn by the players during the Stingrays’ Eighth Annual Pink in the Rink, an event presented by East Cooper Medical Center.

The one-night only pink-themed event features exclusive Pink in the Rink game jerseys, pink hockey sticks, silent auction, live game-worn jersey auction and free parking. A portion of all the proceeds generated from the auctions, ticket sales, vendor tables and special events will be donated to Susan G. Komen Lowcountry to help fight breast cancer.

“We are extremely excited for this season’s event,” said Stingrays President Rob Concannon. “It is a special game on our schedule that continues to grow every season with the goal of raising awareness and funds to fight breast cancer in the Charleston area. We are once again happy to partner with East Cooper Medical Center for this game.”

“East Cooper Medical Center is proud to sponsor the South Carolina Stingrays’ “Pink in the Rink Night.”  This season will mark the 5th year that we have sponsored this event to help raise funds for Susan G. Komen Lowcountry, and to bring awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer,” remarked Jason Alexander, CEO of East Cooper Medical Center.

Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in South Carolina. Our state ranks 13th in the nation for breast cancer deaths. As mammography screening rates have increased, more cases of breast cancer have been found at earlier stages when chances of survival are the highest.

The players’ jerseys will be auctioned live at the end of the hockey game with proceeds going towards Susan G. Komen Lowcountry. In the seven-year history of the event, over $162,000 has been donated to fight breast cancer in the Lowcountry. Pink in the Rink takes place on Saturday, February 22 as the Stingrays battle the Evansville IceMen at 7:05 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum.

East Cooper Medical Center Awards Local Students with Scholarships6/12/2013

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – June 12, 2013 – Seven local students have been awarded $1000 scholarships from the Volunteer Services Organization (VSO), a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization at East Cooper Medical Center. This year the VSO awarded $1000 scholarships to: Stephen Carek, Brooke Lupton, Katherine Nickels, Ashley Prentice, Bradley St. John, Ashton Williams, and Jackson Wood. The students will be attending South Carolina universities including MUSC, USC, and Clemson University.

The Wishing Well Gift Shop at East Cooper Medical Center is managed by volunteers and each year sales from the gift shop go to local charities, medicines for patients in need, and to fund scholarships for area students. To apply for the scholarship, students must complete an application form, provide letters of recommendation and have a cumulative grade point average of B and above. A scholarship committee reviews the applications and chooses the recipients.

The scholarships were given at East Cooper Medical Center during an intimate gathering and celebration to honor the chosen recipients. CEO, Jason Alexander, and Gail Low, President of the VSO, congratulated each student on their hard work and wished them continued success in their college career. The Volunteer Services Organization at East Cooper has awarded scholarships since 1986, the same year the hospital opened in Mount Pleasant, SC.

“We want to congratulate those students for a job well done; they are the future of our community. Our volunteers work hard all year long to raise the money to fund these scholarships and it’s heartwarming for them to know that their hard work is helping someone afford college,” said Gail Low, President of the VSO.

“We see these scholarships as an investment in the future,” said Jason Alexander, CEO of East Cooper Medical Center. “Congratulations to both the recipients and their parents for this exceptional achievement.”

East Cooper Certified RDI Consultant Inducted into the Tenet Heroes Hall of Fame5/22/2013

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – May 22, 2013 – East Cooper Medical Center announced today that Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) Consultant Rebecca Doolittle McFalls was inducted into the Tenet Heroes Hall of Fame, Tenet Healthcare Corporation’s highest honor for employees, at a ceremony in Atlanta, Ga., on April 16.

McFalls is affectionately known as the “super nanny” for families with children with autism.  She manages a robust outpatient rehabilitation operation, which includes two pediatric clinics and an adult clinic. She consistently goes above and beyond for families dealing with autism and people come from all over the area to seek her help and expertise. The mother of an 8-year-old with Asperger’s and ADHD writes: “After multiple failed attempts at therapies across the spectrum, I thought our family was ‘stuck’ with minimal resources, little to no guidance and a very grey future for my son’s success. Becky made me realize that with therapy, training and a little support, my family, including my son, had a very bright future.”

After three months of occupational therapy sessions, the little boy’s tantrums went from several times a day to only a few times a week. His eating habits and communication skills improved and he has a more positive attitude. With McFalls’ help, his parents now have the tools to nurture their son along with his siblings. McFalls’ influence extends beyond the hospital. She volunteers in the community as an expert on autism spectrum disorders, participates in early prevention efforts at child care centers and leads the hospital’s participation in local walks benefiting autism research and awareness. McFalls’ ability to connect with her patients and their families providing innovative, progressive programs to help improve their condition while also educating the community to create greater understanding are the reasons she is a Tenet Hero.

“Our Tenet Hero inductees represent the best of who we are at Tenet and what we do as healthcare providers in the communities we serve,” said Trevor Fetter, Tenet’s president and chief executive officer. “Becky’s extraordinary character and dedication to quality care is an inspiration to us all.”

McFalls was one of 11 employees inducted into the Tenet Heroes Hall of Fame. This year’s recipients were chosen from over 100 nominations. Tenet Heroes are nominated by their hospital’s leadership team and selected based on their dedication to their patients, co-workers and communities. The Tenet Heroes Hall of Fame recognizes exceptional employees who demonstrate Tenet’s values of quality, integrity, service, innovation and transparency.

Hospital Helps Heal Healthcare Costs at Area Schools

Mount Pleasant, SC  – Fifteen area schools were presented with donations from East Cooper Medical Center.  The event took place in the hospital’s main lobby, where East Cooper CEO Jason Alexander presented each school principal and nurse with a $500 check and 1,000 Band-Aids®.

The only request made by the hospital was that the funds should be used for school employee wellness programs or the school’s health clinic.

As a community partner for the past 26 years, East Cooper Medical Center has forged a special relationship with the schools.  Examples of the partnership have included providing healthcare in the schools, the hospital’s junior volunteer program and encouraging student talents, such as the commission of artwork for the new hospital.

The 15 schools who received monetary donations, as well as supplies, this year include:

Belle Hall Elementary
Cario Middle
James B. Edwards Elementary
Laing Middle
Laurel Hill Primary
Jenny Moore Elementary
Moultrie Middle
Mt. Pleasant Academy
Pinckney Elementary
Sullivan’s Island Elementary
Wando High
Mamie P. Whitesides Elementary

“East Cooper Medical Center has been part of this community for a very long time, and we understand our responsibility reaches beyond the excellent care we provide within our facility,” said East Cooper Medical Center CEO Jason Alexander, FACHE.

“What we can offer to our schools’ healthcare programs, for the good of both the faculty and students, will have lasting impact.  Whether we are providing flu shots or encouraging students’ interest in medical professions, we choose to be a facilitator of a community that is healthy in more ways than one.”

“A good education offers a strong foundation for a happy and successful life, but we all know that without healthy educators and healthy students, that good education would be hard to achieve,” said Moultrie Middle School Principal Anna Dassing.

“The dollars East Cooper Medical Center has given are so important in our wellness efforts, and the supply of Band-Aids® will save us money while helping our nurse care for the cuts and scrapes that students tend to get.  We are very thankful.”
