Hospital Helps Heal Healthcare Costs at Area Schools

Mount Pleasant, SC  – Fifteen area schools were presented with donations from East Cooper Medical Center.  The event took place in the hospital’s main lobby, where East Cooper CEO Jason Alexander presented each school principal and nurse with a $500 check and 1,000 Band-Aids®.

The only request made by the hospital was that the funds should be used for school employee wellness programs or the school’s health clinic.

As a community partner for the past 26 years, East Cooper Medical Center has forged a special relationship with the schools.  Examples of the partnership have included providing healthcare in the schools, the hospital’s junior volunteer program and encouraging student talents, such as the commission of artwork for the new hospital.

The 15 schools who received monetary donations, as well as supplies, this year include:

Belle Hall Elementary
Cario Middle
James B. Edwards Elementary
Laing Middle
Laurel Hill Primary
Jenny Moore Elementary
Moultrie Middle
Mt. Pleasant Academy
Pinckney Elementary
Sullivan’s Island Elementary
Wando High
Mamie P. Whitesides Elementary
Lincoln High

“East Cooper Medical Center has been part of this community for a very long time, and we understand our responsibility reaches beyond the excellent care we provide within our facility,” said East Cooper Medical Center CEO Jason Alexander, FACHE.

“What we can offer to our schools’ healthcare programs, for the good of both the faculty and students, will have lasting impact.  Whether we are providing flu shots or encouraging students’ interest in medical professions, we choose to be a facilitator of a community that is healthy in more ways than one.”

“A good education offers a strong foundation for a happy and successful life, but we all know that without healthy educators and healthy students, that good education would be hard to achieve,” said Moultrie Middle School Principal Anna Dassing.

“The dollars East Cooper Medical Center has given are so important in our wellness efforts, and the supply of Band-Aids® will save us money while helping our nurse care for the cuts and scrapes that students tend to get.  We are very thankful.”

Stroke Care Award To East Cooper2/13/2012

East Cooper Medical Center Receives Get With The Guidelines-Gold Quality Achievement Award For Stroke Care

Mt. Pleasant, SC –  East Cooper Medical Center recently received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Gold Quality Achievement Award.

The award recognizes East Cooper Medical Center’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.

“With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Gold Quality Achievement Award addresses the important element of time,” said Toni Bunting, Stroke Coordinator at East Cooper. East Cooper Medical Center has developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department. This includes always being equipped to provide brain imaging scans, having neurologists available to conduct patient evaluations and using clot-busting medications when appropriate.

To receive the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Quality Achievement Award, East Cooper demonstrated 85% adherence in the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke key measures for 24 or more consecutive months. These include aggressive use of medications like tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol-reducing drugs, and smoking cessation.

“The American Stroke Association commends East Cooper Medical Center for its success in implementing standards of care and protocols,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.  “The full implementation of acute care and secondary prevention recommendations and guidelines is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of stroke patients.”

Get With The Guidelines–Stroke uses the “teachable moment,” the time soon after a patient has had a stroke, when they are most likely to listen to and follow their healthcare professionals’ guidance. Studies demonstrate that patients who are taught how to manage their risk factors while still in the hospital reduce their risk of a second heart attack or stroke.

Through Get With The Guidelines–Stroke, customized patient education materials are made available at the point of discharge, based on patients’ individual risk profiles. The take-away materials are written in an easy-to-understand format and are available in English and Spanish. In addition, the Get With The Guidelines Patient Management Tool provides access to up-to-date cardiovascular and stroke science at the point of care.

“The time is right for East Cooper Medical Center to be focused on improving the quality of stroke care by implementing Get With The Guidelines–Stroke. The number of acute ischemic stroke patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to increasing stroke incidence and a large aging population,” said Jason Alexander, CEO of East Cooper Medical Center.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

Gold Quality Heart Care Award To ECMC12/1/2011

East Cooper Medical Center Receives American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines Gold Quality Achievement Award

Mt. Pleasant, SC — East Cooper Medical Center has received the Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure Gold Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association.

The recognition signifies that East Cooper Medical Center has reached an aggressive goal of treating heart failure patients with 85 percent compliance for at least 24 months to core standard levels of care as outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology secondary prevention guidelines for heart failure patients.

Get With The Guidelines is a quality improvement initiative that provides hospital staff with tools that follow proven evidence-based guidelines and procedures in caring for heart failure patients to prevent future hospitalizations.

Under Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure, heart failure patients are started on aggressive risk reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics and anticoagulants while in the hospital. They also receive alcohol/drug use and thyroid management counseling as well as referrals for cardiac rehabilitation before being discharged.

"The full implementation of national heart failure guideline recommended care is a critical step in preventing recurrent hospitalizations and prolonging the lives of heart failure patients," said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass.

"The goal of the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines program is to help hospitals like East Cooper Medical Center implement appropriate evidence-based care and protocols that will reduce disability and the number of deaths in these patients. Published scientific studies are providing us with more and more evidence that Get With The Guidelines works. Patients are getting the right care they need when they need it. That’s resulting in improved survival."

"East Cooper Medical Center is dedicated to making our care for heart failure patients among the best in the country and implementing the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure program will help us accomplish this goal by making it easier for our professionals to improve the long-term outcome for these patients," said Kari Davis, Hospital Spokesperson.

Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure helps East Cooper’s staff develop and implement acute and secondary prevention guideline processes. The program includes quality-improvement measures such as care maps, discharge protocols, standing orders and measurement tools. This quick and efficient use of guideline tools will enable East Cooper Medical Center to improve the quality of care it provides heart failure patients, save lives and ultimately, reduce healthcare costs by lowering the recurrence of heart attacks.

According to the American Heart Association, about 5.7 million people suffer from heart failure. Statistics also show that, each year, 670,000 new cases are diagnosed and more than 277,000 people will die of heart failure.

Hold Your Place In The ER Online8/1/2011

Learn more about InQuickER, hold your place in line

MT. PLEASANT, SC – East Cooper Medical Center has released a new online service called InQuickER, an emergency room service that allows consumers to hold a place at the hospital online, while waiting in the comfort of their own homes.

Beginning today, you can hold your place online at the East Cooper Medical Center Emergency Department by completing an online form and arriving at the projected treatment time. You will be seen by a health professional in the emergency room within 15 minutes. The new service is only intended for individuals who have non-life threatening medical conditions.

"We know people in our community want convenience and better communication," explains Theresa Lynn, RN, BSN, CNE, emergency services director at East Cooper Medical Center. "While estimates and averages about emergency room wait times may vary, many emergency room patients can end up waiting several hours in waiting rooms. With this service, users enjoy the convenience of choosing where they wait and a projected time to see a healthcare professional in the emergency room."

InQuickER does not affect the wait times of other emergency room patients, nor does it allow certain individuals to "cut" in front of others. Additionally, if the projected treatment time changes due to an influx of patients requiring priority treatment, the user will be notified and given an alternate time or a refund.

Increased demand and decreased capacity are creating traffic jams in ER waiting rooms across the country, according to the American College of Emergency Physicians, adding stress and anguish to an experience that invokes anxiety. To address the growing need to deliver more efficient service, hospitals are utilizing InQuickER to streamline the throughput processes while focusing now, more than ever, on patient satisfaction.

InQuickER has designed safeguards in its system intended to prevent those who have potentially life-threatening medical conditions from using the InQuickER service. Individuals requiring immediate medical treatment should go immediately to the nearest emergency department or call 911.

Get more information about holding your place online.

Mount Pleasant, SC – East Cooper Medical Center has earned the nation’s first Joint Commission Gold Seal of ApprovalTM for its minimally invasive colorectal surgery program by demonstrating compliance with national standards for healthcare quality and safety in disease-specific care. The certification award recognizes East Cooper Medical Center’s dedication to continuous compliance with the Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards.

Mount Pleasant, SC  – In honor of the hard work and special care nurses provide to our community daily, East Cooper Medical Center will celebrate National Nurses Week by treating its nurses to a special spa day at the hospital on May 6. More than 200 East Cooper Medical Center nurses will enjoy free manicures, pedicures, make-up consultations, waxing and haircuts in a special "pampering" room. Stylists from the Academy of Cosmetology will provide the services.

National Nurses Week begins on May 6, RN Recognition Day, and concludes May 12, birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession. National Nurses Week is one of the nation's largest healthcare events, recognizing the contributions and commitments nurses make to their community.

"The nurses at East Cooper Medical Center are truly the heart of our organization. They are committed to providing excellence in clinical care and take such great care of our patients," said Meg Scheaffel-Shorrock, RN, MBA, MHA, ECMC Chief Nursing Officer.  "Nurses Week provides us with an opportunity to express our gratitude for their dedication. They definitely deserve some pampering."

The history of Nurses Day can be traced back to 1953 when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a "Nurse Day" in October of the following year. The proclamation was never made, but the following year National Nurses Week was observed October 11 – 16, marking the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale's mission to Crimea.

Gold Quality Award Goes To East Cooper4/18/2011

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC  — East Cooper Medical Center has received the Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure Gold Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association.

“East Cooper Medical Center is dedicated to making our care for heart failure patients among the best in the country and implementing the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure program will help us accomplish this goal by making it easier for our professionals to improve the long-term outcome for these patients,” said Janie Sinacore-Jaberg, Chief Executive Officer of East Cooper Medical Center.

Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure helps East Cooper Medical Center’s staff develop and implement acute and secondary prevention guideline processes.

Stroke Care Quality Plus Award To ECMC3/22/2011

Award demonstrates ECMC’s commitment to quality care for stroke patients

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC -- East Cooper Medical Center has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes East Cooper Medical Center’s commitment and success in implementing excellent care for stroke patients, according to evidence-based guidelines.

To receive the award, East Cooper Medical Center achieved of 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Measures, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.

These measures include aggressive use of medications, such as tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation, all aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.

"With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award demonstrates ECMC’s commitment to being one of the top hospitals in the country for providing aggressive, proven stroke care," said Janie Sinacore-Jaberg, CEO of East Cooper Medical Center. "We will continue with our focus on providing care that has been shown in the scientific literature to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients with evidence-based protocols,"

"East Cooper Medical Center is to be commended for its commitment to implementing standards of care and protocols for treating stroke patients," said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. "The full implementation of acute care and secondary prevention recommendations and guidelines is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of stroke patients."

Get With The Guidelines–Stroke uses the "teachable moment," the time soon after a patient has had a stroke, when they are most likely to listen to and follow their healthcare professionals’ guidance.

In addition, the Get With The Guidelines Patient Management Tool gives healthcare providers access to up-to-date cardiovascular and stroke science at the point of care.

"The time is right for East Cooper Medical Center to be focused on improving the quality of stroke care by implementing Get With The Guidelines–Stroke. The number of acute ischemic stroke patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to increasing stroke incidence and a large aging population," said Sinacore-Jaberg.

ER Wait Times Posted Online3/7/2011

Know Emergency Room Wait Times Before You Leave The House

Mount Pleasant, SC -- Sometimes the most painful part about going to the emergency room is the wait time, but a new addition to the East Cooper Medical Center website is helping patients know how long the wait time in the ER is before they even leave the house.

Residents can now access the new ER Clock on the hospital website Home Page and see the average door-to-bed wait time. They can also see it on a large digital outdoor billboard during their commute on Interstate 526 between the Clements Ferry Road and Daniel Island exits.

Press Ganey, a leading provider of quality improvement solutions in the health care industry, reports that the average ER visit in the U.S. in 2009 lasted four hours and seven minutes but at East Cooper Medical Center, the average wait time in December 2010 was 15 minutes from door to bed.

The time is tracked using a statistical tracker system that transfers data to an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed. The feed automatically displays and updates the time online. Wait times reflect a rolling two-hour average and are updated every five minutes. Patients are seen in priority order based on the type and severity of their medical complaint. The technology is designed for patients with relatively minor medical conditions. Patients with potentially life-threatening health problems should call 9-1-1 so they can receive life-saving measures in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Patients with medical emergencies, such as heart attack, stroke or traumatic injuries, are always seen immediately.

According to Theresa Lynn, RN,  director of emergency medicine at East Cooper Medical Center, the technology is helping patients and the hospital address one of the most common complaints about emergency departments – long wait times.

“We know that families are busier than ever and that every minute matters when you are ill or have a minor injury and of course, no one wants to make a trip to the ER,” says Lynn. “But for patients with non-life-threatening conditions, knowing before they come to East Cooper what they can expect in terms of wait time in the emergency room can make their hospital visit less stressful. It’s so easy, they are even able to look it up on their smart phones too.”

ACR Accreditation Earned By Charleston Breast Center3/7/2011

Charleston, S.C. -- Charleston Breast Center has been awarded a three-year accreditation in breast ultrasound as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

Ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive medical test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal body parts to help physicians diagnose and better treat medical conditions. Ultrasound imaging of the breast produces a picture of the internal structures of the breast.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.

Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

Mount Pleasant, S.C. To earn this distinction, a disease management program undergoes an extensive, unannounced, on-site evaluation by a team of Joint Commission reviewers every two years. The program is evaluated against Joint Commission standards through an assessment of a program’s processes, the program’s ability to evaluate and improve care within its own organization, and interviews with patients and staff.

Celebration marks major milestone in construction of new East Cooper Regional Medical Center10/17/2008Mt. Pleasant, SC - Today at 11:00 a.m. the last I-beam will be hoisted into place on the new East Cooper Regional Medical Center, situated adjacent to the current campus and located near the intersection of Mathis Ferry Road and Interstate 526. The Topping Out ceremony signifies the completion of a solid foundation and marks the end of vertical steel construction on the new replacement hospital. The ceremony, hosted by Robins & Morton, Construction Manager, marks a major milestone in construction of the new facility, which is scheduled for completion in early 2010.

Janie Sinacore-Jaberg, FACHE, CEO of East Cooper Regional Medical Center said, “This project is very important to the East Cooper community. This new hospital gives us the capacity we need to take care of our patients now and in the future.” The construction features the newest design elements that are patient-focused and visitor-friendly.

The tradition of commemorating the placing of the final beam at the highest point of building dates back long before steel was used in construction. The origin of the ceremony was to attract good luck to the people who inhabit the building. Over the centuries the tradition has evolved – with each generation adding their unique symbols. The topmost beam is ceremoniously raised into place, carrying with it an American Flag and often an evergreen tree. In East Cooper Regional’s ceremony, however, a native Palmetto tree harvested from the new hospital’s site will be used. This is the ironworkers’ way of signifying completion of their part of the construction and wishing good fortune to those who will use the building.

During the past week, staff and visitors to East Cooper Regional Medical Center had a chance to leave their mark on history by signing the beam that was placed today.

Going Green at East Cooper Regional Medical Center9/12/2008Mt. Pleasant, SC - Medical professionals are by nature very caring people. So it’s no surprise that that trait would carry over to a concern for the environment. Now a group of East Cooper Regional employees has set out to demonstrate their own commitment to the future of the planet.

The group of employees, which call themselves the Green Team, are led by Delores Minnix, East Cooper Regional’s Payroll Coordinator. After researching the ways in which the hospital’s operations impact the environment, the team developed a plan to help offset those factors.

Naturally, East Cooper Regional established its own environmentally-sensitive policies some time ago. Some of the measures undertaken by the hospital included replacing Styrofoam cups in the cafeteria with eco-friendly paper cups, recycling batteries and light bulbs through the engineering department, and establishing cardboard collection points.

The Green Team decided to augment those efforts with some ideas of their own. They began by inviting Theresa Martin, Specialist for Charleston County Waste and Recycling, to speak on Earth Day at the kickoff of East Cooper Regional’s internal recycling program. Reusable shopping bags were given to employees who attended the event. The Green Team then distributed bins throughout the facility for the collection and disposal of aluminum cans, plastic, glass and paper products, which they now regularly collect for recycling.

Future projects being considered by the team include eliminating the use of bottled water in the hospital and developing transportation alternatives for East Cooper Regional Medical Center employees.
