East Cooper Medical Center receives Perinatal Care certification

Health care accreditor Joint Commission recently awarded the East Cooper Medical Center in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina Perinatal Care Certification.

The Joint Commission issues this certification to Joint Commission-accredited hospitals that provide quality, patient-centered care for mothers and their newborns.

“With Joint Commission certification, it further emphasizes the commitment East Cooper has in providing quality care to our youngest patients and their mothers,” Terri Harris, chief nursing officer, said. “We are proud to have received nine Gold Seals from the Joint Commission, the most in the state of South Carolina. It’s a testament to our culture at East Cooper and the high standards of our maternity services that we strive to achieve every day for our Lowcountry families.”

An onsite review from the Joint Commission determined that East Cooper Medical Center met the requirements of certification, including integrated, coordinated patient-centered care that goes from prenatal through to postpartum care; early identification of high-risk pregnancies and births; risk management for mothers and newborns; and providing patient education and information about perinatal care services.

“Achieving Perinatal Care Certification recognizes an organization’s commitment to healthy mothers and healthy babies,” Wendi Roberts, executive director of the Certification Programs at the Joint Commission, said. “The certification gives providers an unparalleled advantage when it comes to preparing mothers for labor and delivery, while also being able to help them if complications arise.”
