East Cooper Medical Center Earns An ‘A’ For Patient Safety from The Leapfrog Group

May 10, 2022

Mount Pleasant, S.C., - East Cooper Medical Center earned an ‘A’ in the Spring 2022 Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing the hospital’s achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care.

“Having an outstanding rating from an esteemed group such as Leapfrog reflects the unwavering commitment of our physicians, clinical and support staff to put patients and best practices first,” said Patrick Downes, Chief Executive Officer for East Cooper Medical Center.

Chairman of the Hospital’s Governing Board, Rodly Millet, echoed Downes’s sentiment and added that the hospital is an invaluable asset to the community and sets a high bar on standards of care.

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over thirty national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

“‘A’ hospitals show us their leadership is protecting patients from preventable medical harm and error,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It takes genuine commitment at every level – from clinicians to administrators to the board of directors – and we congratulate the teams who have worked so hard to earn this A.”
