MAKOplasty®

If you have been told you need joint replacement surgery, you may be feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about what to expect. At East Cooper Medical Center, we offer a new minimally invasive treatment that may help you feel more confident about your options.

MAKOplasty partial knee replacement is one of the most advance orthopedic procedures available today for those living with painful early to mid-stage osteoarthritis of the knee. Makoplasty is a robotic arm assisted partial knee resurfacing procedure that allows surgeons to selectively target only the knee’s damaged portion while preserving the healthy bone and tissue. It is less invasive than other procedures so recovery time is drastically shortened.

For the patient, benefits may include:

Smaller incisions - provide faster healing and little to no scarring
Shortened hospital stay - or even outpatient surgery
Minimal blood loss - less chance a blood transfusion will be needed during surgery
Less post-surgical pain - minimizes the length of time or need for pain medication
Faster healing time - get back to your normal routine faster

The procedure requires just a four-to-six inch incision over the knee. Under the control of the orthopedic surgeon, real-time visual, tactile and auditory feedback facilitates ideal implant positioning and placement. It is this level of surgical accuracy in treating early stage osteoarthritis that can result in a more natural feeling knee and motion. In many cases, patients are permitted to walk soon after surgery and return to normal daily activities shortly thereafter.
