Easing the Pain of Mammograms

Pain, or fear of pain, is cited as one of the main reasons why 40% of women over the age of 40 do not get their annual mammogram screening. Early detection of breast cancer dramatically improves survival rates, so missing an annual exam could have devastating outcomes for women. If you’re one of those women who avoids getting mammograms, you may be interested in the latest development—MammoPads®.

MammoPad breast cushions are soft foam pads that can help relieve the discomfort many women feel during a mammogram. The cushion is placed on the surface of the image detector, providing a softer, more comfortable mammogram.

Women who are anxious about their mammogram may find it more difficult to relax their muscles during the exam. The tension makes it harder for the specialist to properly position the breast and achieve adequate compression. The reduction of discomfort found with MammoPad breast cushions helps women relax, assisting with proper positioning and sufficient compression.

Clinical studies have shown 3 out of every 4 women experience an average 50% decrease in discomfort with the breast cushions. While they provide comfort, they do not compromise the high level of image quality needed for a routine mammogram or require increased radiation dose during a mammogram.

The MammoPads are being used on our new 3D mammography technology which provides a new way of looking at breast tissue. The Charleston Breast Center has the Hologic Selenia Genius 3D Mammography system, the same system used to study the benefits of 3D mammography. Those studies showed a 41% increase in invasive breast cancer detection and up to 40% reduction in false positive recalls.

The Charleston Breast Center is excited to share our latest effort with the community and we look forward to continuing to provide outstanding quality of care to our patients.
