Through the years, there have been many achievements made in breast reconstruction surgery. No longer do women need to face scars that impact their self image. Today advanced techniques have given plastic surgeons the ability to reconstruct a woman’s
breast back to its natural appearance. If you or a loved one have undergone a mastectomy or had the procedure years ago, breast reconstruction surgery may help to restore your self-confidence and regain your original shape.
Restoring Self-Confidence Through Breast Surgery
Breast reconstruction can be performed using saline, silicone implants or natural tissue from other parts of the body. In most cases, the procedure is performed in conjunction with a mastectomy, but may be delayed to allow the chest to heal or until the
conclusion of other needed treatments, such as radiation therapy.
Some women opt out of breast reconstruction. Instead, they may choose a prosthesis worn under the bra, and others may choose nothing at all. Consulting with a plastic surgeon experienced in breast reconstruction can help determine the best treatment option
for you.
Important considerations for breast reconstruction include:
- The woman’s health and past medical history
- A past history of breast surgery
- The amount of breast tissue to be removed
- The health of the tissue at the site of the surgery
- Risk factors such as heart disease, diabetes, smoking, obesity and other illnesses
- The probability of complications
- The woman’s desires
